On being sick: where I ramble about physics and other random things

I never really understood the phrase "Sick as a Dog." Using the Google and going to the number one ranked page I found out that it was first used in the 1700s but no one really knows why it is used that way. So I'll just say I'm sick as a dog who has a horrible cold.

I got said cold from MF. He hit the milestone of being sick for the first time.

Little dude got sick Friday night and the only way to get him to stop crying and sleep was to sleep next to him. He needed to be touching one of us to feel comfortable. Really it's pretty common and we would have had him in our bed if we weren't 100% sure he would crawl over one of us and off the bed.

So there I slept on the floor next to his floor bed...essentially making it a bed floor for both of us, he needed to curl up next to me.

Every 45 minutes or so I would be awakened by being kicked in the head, crawled over or having a toy thrown at my feet. He'd wake and get antsy and since we had this stupid idea of no crib he's able to do whatever he wants in the room...sometimes it backfires.

Well, and here's where the physics come in, when morning came I had a huge neck/headache from sleeping on the floor and getting very little sleep: action > reaction.

Yada yada yada, he was sniffly all weekend and wasn't sleeping well. I was wiping copious amounts of snot off on my hand or sleeve then onto my jeans...I'll wash them soon...but I didn't mind.

That's a huge shift for me, I hated snotty kids...I mean let's get real a child with snot just running down their nose is just plain disgusting. But when it's your kid it's different, it's a combination of cute and super sad...like ____ (pretend I came up with a good analogy even though I can't because I'm too sick to come up with something good. I was thinking a movie that was cute and sad but nothing came to mind.)

So there I am wiping all the snot off of him, or maybe 50% of the snot with Staci getting the other half, when a tiny little cold germ decides to look for a new home and come into me.

Miloh got me sick: action > reaction.

And this made me feel more sympathetic to him, because I probably have what he had, and it started off brutal.

Then as I was sweating out whatever he passed on to me I thought about how he'd be when sick. Will he  be like me or Staci.

Staci goes from 0-60 immediately. She's never just a little sick...in fact she always says whatever she has is the "worst". So each cold is worse than the next if you think about it. I kid her about it a lot because it's kind of funny...well it is if you're not the one who has the "worst" sinus headache ever. But she's good at fighting whatever she has out fast.

I on the other hand don't often get sick. Maybe twice a year. I get the start of colds and such but I can usually get rid of them before they start...my theory is that I've taken so few antibiotics (because I'm the typical guy who won't go to the doctor unless I'm dying) that my body can handle everything.

But when I get sick I get really sick, and that's when my feet start hurting. I do this odd thing when I'm sick where I walk weirdly on my feet so my ankles hurt, because if my ankles hurt it makes me forget the pain of whatever I have. I know it's odd but it's subconscious and I've been doing it for as long as I can remember...it's my defense mechanism.

So will MF rarely get sick yet when he does will he screw his feet up so much that it's painful to walk for days? Or will he get sick more often and go from 0-60 but get rid of the sickness fast? Or will it be a combo?

From this cold it looks like it could be a combo. He was really sick for two nights but we helped kick it out fast. But now his runny nose lingers.

But if he could talk he could honestly say it is the "worst" cold he's ever had.

  1. You wrote this while being sick? I think you just found the cure to ADD. The common cold.

Another guest post

I did a little guest post a bit ago for mom-nom.com, the post is below the original pre-amble.

If you head to Mom-nom.com you can see a little guest post I wrote. It's about being a daddy blogger in the midst of a bunch of mommy bloggers.

The post is kicking off Tiffany's new site. It used to be called Feels Like Home but then some other blogger felt that she owned the name because she was thinking about to registering the name...even though really the name comes from a song. And I think it's pretty ridiculous that the other woman threatened a law suit because of this.

And that BS and some other twitter high school antics lead me to one of my greatest literary feats...a little rant on twitter.

The image is below, if you click on it you can read the whole thing...it goes from the bottom up. A little warning if you read it...there may be an f-bomb or 20...and now it's in the Library of Congress...awesome.

Took awhile... Here's an infographic of MF's first year

I finished this about a year ago just for my personal use but thought I'd share it. It's a visualization of MF's first year in numbers. Diapers (with and without poo), bottles and photos taken are the lines in the background. The markers are milestones. The ones on the top are regular milestones you'd see on a chart and the ones on the bottom are things he did that were firsts. Hint... Use the toggle full page at the lower right of the image... I'm not sure why zoom.it is making it all bitmappy but it's pretty readable. Once I find something better to show this I'll update the image. I'll also be adding to this. I have a lot more I can put on it but I'm not sure when I'll get to it... Check back in 15 years.

My hundredth post: seriously a clips post?

In my last post I mentioned I was working on getting some celebs for this post. I was in talks with the quarterback of the Saints whatever his name is...I'm sure I could look it up. I was also trying to get Conan...those talks were going really well but then NBC squashed it. There were more but the moral is it's just me.

So I thought I'd do a clips post to show my journey from dude who was scared of kids to dad. If you're new to my blog this will be a CliffsNotes version of what you missed. If you've been checking it out for awhile think of this as a best of. And since a blog can't work like a TV show if you want to get the full clip show experience you'll have to click through to the posts...but this will give you the gist.

In the beginning...Staci and I wanted to have a child but we both had totally different experience with kids. Kids have always been magically attracted to her...which is probably why she is so great at her career as a Montessori teacher…
