First Day

Monday was Miloh's first day of school... He started in the toddler community at Staci's school. Actually it was only the first day of phase in week so he'd only be there an hour... but still. And yeah he's kind of young for school, but the toddler community in Montessori is made for kids his age. You may remember that before Miloh was born I was thinking about what a good dad is... in that post I decided I'd make waffles as a nice comfort food for our kid (we had no idea what kind we'd be having). So I decided it would be nice way to start Miloh's first day of school. After breakfast we got Miloh ready to head out. We told him he would be going to school. He's familiar with the school and his new room. He actually loves the environment, it's really beautiful. He took some infant classes there, and his teacher was the first person not related to us (or not a hospital worker) that saw him so they have a great bond. So we think he kind of unde...

Same shit, different year

A year ago Miloh was a week old. I'd spend nights in his room, underneath the glow of the Twilight Turtle , bouncing to soothe him as he cries. When the cries subsided you could hear the soundtrack of some Rockabye Baby lullabies playing on the iPod. Because of pure exhaustion we forget when we realized that he slept better without the music and the turtle. I'm guessing the turtle batteries and iPod died on the same day. He probably went right to sleep and so they never came back on. Right before Miloh turned one we dumped the pacifier. We saw that it was becoming an addiction and thought if we broke the habit now it would be easier than later. And since it was only used when he slept it was easy to change out his monkey  Harlow  for the pacifier. What helped the transition was a new, well old, routine. The Twilight Turtle was back on and the iPod, packed with Rockabye Baby lullabies, made a return as well. With a little fuss it worked well. In Miloh's one year do...

Adventures in floor bedding

A lot of folks have asked Staci and I questions about the floor bed. What it is exactly, when to do it, how to do it. I tried to answer them in a post I did a bit ago. But the most asked question is what do you do if he rolls off. Our first answer was always that we didn't need to worry about it because he wouldn't roll for a while. But in reality the answer is that the mattress is 4-5 inches tall and there is a rug under it so if he rolls off he'll be okay since it's not long like the carpet. Also if he was able to roll off he'd have the ability to be mobile and get to his back. That's all in theory...on Mother's Day we were finally able to answer the question in practice. We had just put him on his bed for a nap...then we talked about how we were happy that we figured out a nice routine from him and that we were working as a great team. We walked downstairs and heard a little giggle on the radio monitor. So we turned on the video monitor...there wa...

Miloh's first real roll

Miloh had his first full on roll today...yeah it's super early. It might seem cruel that we were laughing but we really wanted him to work through it. It was unexpected so Staci grabbed her phone just as he started...we missed the first little bit...but it's awesome anyway. I should explain a bit what was going on because it's a bit hard to see. As he started to roll he had a tight grip on the blanket. He wanted to roll but also wanted to keep ahold of the blanket. In the end he got both...but it still made him cry. The video was shot with a phone so it's bit dark. I might try to work on that later.
