More about the name: A teaser

When we started thinking about having kids Staci and I had all the discussions about names.

I was thinking that if we have a boy we'd name it after one of the greatest actors of our time, French Stewart. The reason I like French as a first name is that telemarketers and the like mispronounce Friedman and say it like it's spelled Fried-man instead of the real pronunciation Freed-man. Crazy Hungarians are to blame for the odd spelling but I think it's common knowledge that that's how you pronounce it. So the kid would be called French Fried-man...but some folks thought that would be cruel...and Monkey was rejected as a girls name.

But Staci had the idea to use her grandmother (Minnie) and great aunt's (Hilda...although she went by Auntie...pictured above) initials as the first and last letter in a name. That's because whether it was to slip some cash in each pocket or to give her a little tap when she was saying things she shouldn't they were always at her side.

So we got M as the first letter and H as the last. I suggested going old school with a nod to the Muppets in naming the kid Menomenah. That, like my other suggestions, was rejected.

We nailed some names down for a boy or girl...I'm just not sure if Staci's cool with me divulging it yet. So...more to come.

Comments

  1. Menorah? (the candle thing)
    Mynah? (the bird, alternate spelling)
Mirth? (joy, a feeling I'm told some feel)
Moth? (that would be awesome, like Apple, Denim, and Banjo)

Clearly I'm an amateur at this baby-naming game.

  2. I'm still voting for P.O.O.F., boy or girl.

  3. I actually love Moth...and if Staci is out of it after the birth I can probably sneak it in.

  4. I think I will have to call the pre-kid Menenomenah from now until you guys say otherwise!!! It's really catchy and makes me start dancing like a muppett whenever I think it! ~Jen

  5. Hi there Kenny. My name is Allison Louwagie. A friend of Staci's from Herzl camp. What about Matildah for a girl?? There is a little Matildah in my son's preschool class and I love the name on her. Just a suggestion:)

  6. Hey Allison...thanks for the suggestion...we actually have the names picked and that was in the hopper so we'll see.

Dear Scott the Paleontologist – the response... Wait sorry... the awesome response

In my last post I asked some incredibly pressing questions to Dr. Scott Sampson aka Scott the Paleontologist. Questions that any parent of a Dinosaur Train fan wants to know... I got a reply and I have to say Dr. Scott is hilarious and pretty awesome... But I'm a fan of science humor... So here are his responses in line with mine. They're in blue because that's the color of most of  Shiny Pteranodon. Dear Scott the Paleontologist, My son Miloh and I are fans of Dinosaur Train and as an avid fan I have some questions regarding it that I hope you can answer: The train is a steam engine. Does it run off coal? If it does use coal is there a possibility that greenhouse gases from that could have lead to the extinction of dinosaurs? How come this isn't a theory? Very interesting question. Yes, to the best of my knowledge, the Dinosaur Train runs on fossil fuels, but we actually do have an episode upcoming where we investigate alternative fuel trains. Given that

Response to a comment about breastfeeding

Since I'm a dude and unable to produce milk from I never thought I woul have to defend the reason we formula feed instead of breast feed. But I received a comment on a recent post so I thought I would talk about it here. I'll get to the why we don't later but I'll start off on a tangent. First off I don't want to alienate the person who asked the comment because they say they are a reader and I'm cool with anyone stopping by. But I can't call the person out anyway because the comment was anonymous...and here is where I go into a little bit of a rant, and if you follow me on twitter you know I'm a fan of the rant. I'm assuming the comment was anonymous on purpose. Perhaps the person is a friend or someone I follow on twitter. Maybe they didn't want to ruin that relationship by coming out and saying it. I'm  a big boy and can handle criticism. Anonymous comments are never things like "Where did you get that cool toy?" they ar

New Giveaway: ABC's for Expectant Dads - 10 awesome copies

Winners have been picked for the giveaway. Todd was so nice as to give all who entered by the deadline a copy of his book. Thanks all who entered...I sent an email to you for your info. Please email me (info on the header) if you don't get that email. Rommel I could not find your email...please let me know your contact info. A bit ago I found Todd Lieman in Twitterland and he sent me a copy of his book ABC's for Expectant Dads: The Ultimate A- for Dads-in-Training. I'd looked at a bunch of expectant dad books and I thought most were terrible. I did pick up The Expectant Father and I liked it but I haven't looked at it in months. I think it's tough for dad's because we're just reading about what's going on with the mothers and it's easier to hear it from them. Staci is reading so much that she keeps me up to date on things I should know and I'm sure most expectant moms are the same. I'm also luckily in that doing this blog has connected
